Lumbini branding goes live on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti

iata May 16, 2022

We worked on the branding for Lumbini, with the Nepal Tourism Board and Lumbini Development Trust during the pandemic . There couldn’t be another auspicious day for us to share this with you other than on Buddha Jayanti itself!

An elaborate project that entailed creating the visual mark, identity and profile to this iconic city was a creative challenge for us as a team. We undertook the project with all the responsibility that it carried in accordance with the religious, spiritual and historical significance that Lumbini carries as a city.

Lumbini, the birthplace of the Sakyamuni Buddha, is the Universal Centre of Peace. The city carries monumental significance for Nepal and is a sacred land for Buddhists all around the world.

Inspired by the Brahmi Lipi inscription on the Ashoka Pillar, we have created the logo for Lumbini city. This ancient script is a part of the Tripitaka and Theravada commentaries and it is what was used as the medium of communication between monks and nuns back in the day. While the script is no longer in use as it used to be, the language is still in use and is a major part of Buddhist ritual ceremonies.

A unique element of the logo for the city is the old script that translates to “Hedabudhajate”: this restates that the city is the birthplace of Sakyamuni Buddha. The strokes and shapes used in the visual identity are also an homage to the archaeology preserved in Lumbini.

The city branded as Lumbini - fountain of peace and buddhism - is fitting for the cultural and religious significance that it holds. We have created the brand collateral and supporting design elements for this project with the same message at its core. The murals drawn and illustrated for the city envelope the identity of Lumbini and present the city’s identity visually.

We have constructed a detailed brand guideline for this visual identity outlining all information about constructing it and also about its usage.

It was an honour for us to be a part of this city branding project, and are more than delighted and grateful to see our work come to life on this auspicious day with the inauguration of the Gautam Buddha International Airport, Bhairahawa, and the International Buddhist Assembly and Meditation Hall Center, we look forward to seeing more integrated communications and hope that the brand is carried forward well by all stakeholders.
